The Egyptian Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy is considering suspending the implementation of coal energy projects, which would have had a total capacity of 9,250 megawatts (MW), with investments of nearly $6 billion.
Regarding the two coal power plant projects at Hamrawein and the UAE’s Al Nowais project, the Egyptian Electricity Holding company’s Chairman, Gaber Desouky, revealed that the ministry is mulling either postponing or exchanging them with renewable energy projects.
The ministry has a surplus of 17,000 MW in the national grid, Desouky reported to Al Mal.
