Egypt’s Abydos II Wins Africa Deal of the Year at PFI Awards 2025

The Abydos II solar project has reached a major international milestone after being named “Africa Deal of the Year” at the Project Finance International (PFI) Awards 2025. The recognition highlights the project as a premier model for large-scale renewable energy integration and green financing across the continent.

Located in the Aswan Governorate, Abydos II serves as an advanced technological benchmark, combining 1 gigawatt (GW) of solar photovoltaic capacity with a state-of-the-art 600 megawatt-hour (MWh) battery energy storage system (BESS), according to a statement by the Cabinet.

Once fully operational, the facility is expected to provide clean, reliable electricity to more than 500,000 households annually.

The project’s success is a direct reflection of Egypt’s Nexus of Water, Food, and Energy (NWFE) program. This initiative has been instrumental in coordinating a seamless partnership between the Egyptian Government, private developers, and International Financial Institutions (IFIs).

By streamlining the investment process, the NWFE model has successfully attracted significant green capital, reinforcing Egypt’s National Sustainable Energy Strategy and the broader Egypt Vision 2030.

With commercial operations slated to begin in June 2026, Abydos 2 stands as a cornerstone of Egypt’s goal to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy.

This milestone project demonstrates Egypt’s ability to attract top-tier international lenders and private sector developers for green investment, while directly supporting the reduction of carbon emissions and ensuring long-term energy security through advanced storage technology.

The official awards and certificates are scheduled to be presented during the Project Finance International (PFI) Awards ceremony in London on February 19, 2026.

The project delivers clean electricity at a tariff of $2.8 per Kilowatt-hour (kWh). This is recognized as one of the most competitive rates in Africa for a hybrid solar-plus-storage project.
