Egypt to Inaugurate Mega Wind Farm

Minister of Electricity Mohamed Shaker will inaugurate a 580-megawatt (MW) wind farm this weekend, Al Ahram reported.

Project manager Osama Noman said that it is the biggest facility of its kind in the world, in terms of area, number of turbines, and power generation capacity.

The wind farm, located in the Gabal El-Zeit area of the Red Sea governorate, has 300 turbines. Construction began in 2015 and so far EGP 12 billion has been invested in the project.

The first phase of 120 turbines is already operational and connected to the national grid, producing around 240 MW of power.

The second 220 MW phase will add another 120 turbines to the grid, while the third phase of 60 turbines will generate a further 120 MW. These phases will be connected to the grid in June 2018.
