Egypt has signed 32 power purchasing agreements (PPAs) for solar energy projects that are being conducted in Benban, Aswan to develop the biggest solar energy park in the world, said Mohamed Shaker, Minister of Electricity, according to Akhbar El Yom Newspaper.

The solar park’s capacity is 1,465 MegaWatt (MW), of which 500 MW have been added to the national grid so far, while the remaining electricity will be added gradually until the end of 2019, Shaker noted.

Egypt has taken important steps to utilize its renewable energy in cooperation with the private sector and in accordance with a number of mechanisms including independent energy product and launching competitive tenders as well as the feed-in tariff (FiT) system for renewable energy, Shaker explained.

Egypt has set a strategy for its renewable energy, with the aim to maximize it to around 42% of the country’s energy mix by 2035.
