Egypt, Cyprus Exchange Views on Joint Projects During ADIPEC 2024

Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi has met with the Cypriot Minister of Energy Giorgos Papanastasiou in which they discussed the means of cooperation and integration between the two countries in light of the growing natural gas discoveries in Cyprus and the provision of gas infrastructures in Egypt.

This came during their attendance in the ADIPEC conference and exhibition 2024. For his part, Papanastasiou expressed his desire to develop the strategic partnership with Egypt through intensifying the cooperation in natural gas fields.

He stressed that Egypt is an important partner for Cyprus in the region, confirming his support for the option of transporting gas from Cyprus to foreign markets via Egyptian liquefaction facilities, as it has a competitive economic advantage.

Badawi highlighted Egypt’s keenness to provide full support to the Cypriot side, enabling Cyprus and its partners from international energy companies to link the production of Cypriot gas fields to Egyptian production facilities within the framework of the governmental agreement between Egypt and Cyprus.

Additionally, the meeting witnessed negotiations on the proposed amendments to the intergovernmental agreement to establish offshore pipeline to transport gas from Cyprus to Egypt, so that expanding the scope of cooperation to include all future projects being discussed regarding the development of natural gas fields in Cyprus and opportunities for transporting it to Egypt.

The discussions also included the updates regarding the development of the Cypriot Aphrodite and Cronos fields and connecting their production to the Egyptian facilities, as this solution represents great economic feasibility for exploiting Cypriot gas.

Moreover, the two sides discussed the latest developments of the commercial structure for developing the Cypriot Cronos field in a way that achieves the common interests of the Cypriot and Egyptian sides and the companies participating in developing the field.
