Egypt and China reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in the energy sector, including renewable energy projects, as Chinese President Xi Jinping began a state visit to Egypt on September 1–2, 2026, marking the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
The two presidents praised continued successful cooperation on major projects in infrastructure, transportation, energy, manufacturing, space, and technology, according to a joint statement issued following their official talks.
Egypt and China have reaffirmed their commitment to aligning Egypt Vision 2030 with the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). This strategic synergy aims to accelerate Egypt’s transformation into a premier regional hub for industry, logistics, clean energy, and the digital economy—bridging Asia, Africa, and Europe.
This will be achieved by strengthening joint Egyptian-Chinese partnerships, encouraging Chinese companies to explore avenues for cooperation in areas such as industrial localization (including electric vehicles, shipbuilding, and renewable energy such as solar panels and wind turbines), and seawater desalination.
Egypt was the first Arab and African country to recognize the People’s Republic of China and establish diplomatic relations with it in 1956. The past seven decades have witnessed remarkable development in the relations of cooperation and friendship between the two countries, which have continued to develop in a sound and stable manner as one of the characteristics of Egyptian-Chinese partnership, which is represented by equality, trust, mutual benefit, mutual advantage, solidarity, mutual support, and win-win, according to the joint statement.
This joint statement comes at a time of unprecedented strategic momentum in Sino-Egyptian relations, with the energy and green transition sectors serving as key pillars. This partnership is highlighted by the growing footprint of Chinese energy giants within the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone), marked by major investments in renewable energy, solar component manufacturing, and the localization of energy storage systems (BESS), such as Sungrow’s $50 million storage project.
Furthermore, bilateral cooperation extends to multi-billion-dollar green hydrogen developments with firms like China Energy, as well as grid modernization and energy storage initiatives with Huawei and China Southern Power Grid (CSGI), directly supporting Egypt’s target to scale its renewable energy share to 45% by 2028.
