EGPC Advances Energy Transition with 38 Projects, Saving EGP 5.2 B in 2024/25

Thirty-eight projects were launched by the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC)  during the fiscal year (FY) 2024/25; of these, 18 are now fully operational, while 20 are in advanced stages of execution, according to an EGPC statement on the status of energy transition projects in its affiliated companies.  These projects led to an annual financial saving of approximately EGP 5.2 billion.

The projects added 30 megawatts of solar power capacity and reduced diesel consumption by around 68 million liters annually. Additionally, 4.5 billion cubic feet of flare gases were utilized and converted into value-added petroleum products, contributing to a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions by about 470,000 tons per year.

Salah Abdel Kerim, Chairman of EGPC,  affirmed the necessity of integrating the energy transition into the core of the operational systems within EGPC’s affiliated companies, in alignment with the fourth and fifth pillars of the ministry’s strategy.

Abdel Kerim highlighted the importance of moving beyond a fragmented view that sees energy transition projects as exceptional or separate efforts. He noted that the next phase requires an integration of operational requirements with the environmental and economic frameworks to ensure sustainable returns and enhance the sector’s competitiveness.

In parallel, EGPC has taken proactive steps to expand into new renewable energy projects by utilizing sites in the Western Desert and Alexandria. This is being done through innovative financing mechanisms that do not place a direct financial burden on the corporation. Technical surveys have been conducted to identify suitable areas, and coordination with specialized companies is underway in preparation for implementation, based on technical and economic feasibility priorities.
