Decarbonization MoUs at EGYPS 2022 Affirm Egypt’s Commitment to Emissions Reduction

On the sidelines of EGYPS 2022, Egypt signed a number of memoranda of understanding (MoUs) for various projects related to decarbonization, in the presence of the Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Tarek El Molla.

The signing started with the MoU between the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS), Shell, and Schlumberger to study the possibility of developing mutually beneficial business in the field of decarbonization with a focus on mechanisms for the usage of hydrogen and low-carbon energy through two main axes: hydrogen and ammonia activity and carbon storage in gas activities.

EGAS also signed a MoU with Shell to cooperate in determining the options available to decarbonize the Egyptian gas industry by identifying projects that can reduce carbon dioxide emissions, sharing the best methods, means, and practices for carbon management strategies, and evaluating the technical and financial feasibility of these strategies.

In the same context, EGAS signed a MoU with DNV to provide technical guidance to EGAS in the field of energy transition and decarbonization by evaluating the technical and economic feasibility of decarbonization in terms of transportation, storage, and the use of low-carbon hydrogen derivatives, such as ammonia.

Additionally, EGAS signed a MoU with Worley to study aspects of cooperation and services that Worley can perform with regard to the petroleum sector’s efforts to prepare a decarbonization roadmap and a preliminary study of the most important sources of emissions in the petroleum sector and proposals for aspects of reducing those emissions.

From EGAS’s side, Magdy Galal, chairman of the company, signed the MoUs. From the partners’ side, the MoUs were signed by Sherif Bayoumi, Executive Director of Schlumberger in Egypt and the Eastern Mediterranean; Khaled Kacem, Country Chairman and Managing Director in Shell Egypt; Hisham El Grawany, Regional Manager Egypt & North Africa at DNV; and Chris Behan, Sr. Director, PMC Portfolio (Egypt Operations) at Worley.
