As part of ongoing efforts to boost domestic production and reduce energy imports, Egypt’s Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources (MoMPR) has announced a new natural gas discovery in the Western Desert. The find was made by Badr El-Din Petroleum Company (BAPETCO) in the Badr-15 area through the BED 15-31 well.
According to the Ministry, the new well has already been brought online with an initial production rate of 16 million cubic feet (mcf ) of gas and 750 barrels of condensate per day. The discovery, located in the Lower Bahariya reservoir, is expected to add around 15 billion cubic feet (bcf) of gas to Egypt’s reserves.
A technical reassessment of the reservoir is currently underway to determine optimal sites for future drilling, to further increase production and maximize the country’s natural gas resources.
The announcement aligns with the Ministry’s broader strategy to attract investment, enhance exploration activities, and support Egypt’s position as a regional hub for natural gas production and export.
The Western Desert witnessed several major discoveries during 2025. The latest one was reported on 27 August 2025, when Agiba Petroleum Company (in partnership with Eni S.p.A.) said its “North Deep Lotus-1” well delivered an initial production of around 1,835 barrels of crude oil and 7 million cubic feet of gas per day and is estimated to add about 5 million barrels of oil equivalent (boe) of reserves.
