The Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources (MoPMR) has completed 90% of the planned works to connect natural gas to households under the presidential Decent Life initiative. During a meeting with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi confirmed that efforts are being accelerated to finalize the rural infrastructure projects in alignment with the national development timetable.
From July 2024 to December 2025, the ministry connected natural gas to 940,000 homes, a milestone that saved an estimated 17 million butane cylinders and their associated subsidies. To date, over 650 villages have benefited from the initiative, according to a statement by MoPMR.
Furthermore, the ministry has converted 90,000 vehicles to run on natural gas and established approximately 50 new fueling stations, reinforcing the transition toward cleaner domestic energy consumption.
The meeting also addressed the recent Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in Beirut for the supply of natural gas to Lebanon’s Deir Ammar power plant. Badawi emphasized that this agreement strengthens Egypt’s role as a regional energy hub, facilitating the receipt and re-export of natural gas to neighboring countries.
The MoU includes a framework for transferring Egyptian expertise in exploration, production, and distribution to the Lebanese energy sector through joint technical working groups.
Regarding upstream activities, Badawi highlighted that the ministry is moving at an accelerated pace to develop untapped natural gas discoveries and bring them into production.
By signing several agreements with leading international companies and applying advanced recovery technologies, the sector aims to maximize output from existing fields and maintain the momentum of recent exploration successes in the Mediterranean and Western Desert.
