Badawi and ThyssenKrupp Review Progress on Strategic CCUS Joint Venture at MOPCO

Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi met with ThyssenKrupp Uhde CEO Nadja Håkansson to discuss accelerating cooperation in decarbonization and sustainable energy infrastructure, according to a statement by the ministry.

The meeting, held on the sidelines of the Baker Hughes Annual Meeting in Italy, focused on leveraging ThyssenKrupp’s global expertise in industrial plant construction—specifically within the ammonia, methanol, and petrochemical sectors—to modernize Egypt’s energy landscape.

A primary focus was on integrating Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS) technologies into existing facilities to reduce the industrial carbon footprint. Badawi emphasized that integrating CCUS technologies into existing facilities is a cornerstone of Egypt’s broader strategy to transition to a low-carbon economy.

A central highlight of the meeting was the progress update on the joint project at the Misr Fertilizers Production Company (MOPCO) complex in Damietta. This initiative represents a milestone for the region, marking the first CCUS project of its kind in both Egypt and Africa. The partnership aims to transfer world-class technical knowledge in green hydrogen and low-carbon ammonia to the Egyptian petroleum sector.

Furthermore, Badawi highlighted Egypt’s commitment to adopting sustainable environmental solutions, noting that collaboration with international technology leaders is vital for achieving national energy transition goals.

For her part, Håkansson expressed pride in ThyssenKrupp’s long-standing relationship with Egypt, citing the company’s track record of building over 3,000 chemical process plants worldwide. She praised the ongoing cooperation with MOPCO, labelling the Damietta project a pioneering step that reflects Egypt’s leadership in regional environmental stewardship.

In a move to further solidify the partnership, Badawi formally invited Håkansson to be a keynote speaker at the upcoming Egypt Energy Show (EGYPES 2026), scheduled for March 30 – April 1 in Cairo.

ThyssenKrupp Uhde is a premier global engineering firm specializing in chemical plant construction. Its portfolio includes leading technologies for fertilizers, polymers, and base chemicals, with a strategic focus on pioneering green hydrogen and sustainable chemical value chains.
