AUC Researchers in Pursuit to Boost Oil Recovery Rates with Nanoparticles

Although nanotechnology has been applied in the downstream petroleum industry for decades already, it was only in the 2000s that the upstream sector really began to take interest. Since then, research on upstream nanotechnology applications has boomed. In Egypt, this kind of research is conducted at the AUC by Dr. Adel Salem, Assistant Professor of Petroleum and Energy Engineering, and Abdelrahman Ibrahim El-Diasty, Research Assistant at AUC, and a senior student at Suez University.

Experts continuously insist that Egypt's energy woes would be reduced significantly if the nation became more energy efficient. Recent technological advances have allowed for economically viable extraction of unconventional forms of gas. Unconventional forms of natural gas including shale, tight gas, and coalbed methane, generally occur in lower concentrations over larger areas compared to conventional gas reservoirs, making it difficult to extract. Currently, shale gas production is predominately limited to the United States, where it continues to grow rapidly. Shale gas was primarily responsible for the increase in gas production in the United States between 2010-2011. Noting the success of shale in the US, many other countries, including Egypt, are now considering the possibilities of tapping their own unconventional resources.

The US is currently in the midst of what has been dubbed an energy renaissance. This renaissance was spurred by the country's ability to tap unconventional oil and gas. Unconventional oil lacks a standard definition, but it is generally characterized as more difficult and expensive to extract than conventional oil. The conventional-unconventional categories are fluid, as some types of oil currently considered conventional were once labeled as unconventional.

The unrest following the removal of Former President Mohamed Morsi has heightened the post-revolution impact that declining tourism revenue and decreasing foreign investment have had upon Egypt's economy. Shale Gas

Shale gas refers to natural gas that is trapped in small pores inside shale rock. Since the pores are not connected and shale is relatively impermeable, it is not possible to extract large amounts of shale gas by using conventional technologies. Therefore shale gas is called an unconventional hydrocarbon. The emergence of cost-effective technologies for extracting shale gas has caused a surge in its production in the US over the past few years. There is no precise estimate of how much shale gas exists world wide, but the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) estimates that the US and the 41 other countries have a total of 7,299 trillion cf of technically recoverable shale gas. This represents 37% of the world's total technically recoverable gas resources.
